Bull Street Asylum
The Bull Street Asylum in Columbia SC accepted its first patient in December, 1828, the main Babcock Building of the Asylum closed in 1987. By 1929 there were over 4500 patients. Today the unkempt grounds and decaying building illustrate forgotten times, a forgotten place and sadly too many forgotten people.
The property has been sold and re-zoned for mixed-use including retail, residential and commercial plus a minor league baseball stadium. Hopefully this new site will be dedicated to the forgotten people of the Bull Street Asylum. A great historical narrative of Bull Street can be found at http://www.digitizingbullstreet.com/story/
